“I put on the event because I really wanted to bring together enough students, as well as their families to be able to show the world the power of what their dreams can do” -A.M.
Celebrating students’ dreams is the heart of Technology for the Future’s mission. The Open Doors Challenge Event was thrown to do just that — celebrate the dreams of the kids in the local community and show them they are believed in by gifting them with a laptop to assist them with their education.
Adrian teamed up with Brian Hamilton, founder of the Brian Hamilton Foundation, in order to make the event possible. Through the Open Doors Challenge, Adrian challenged students in Guilford County to submit videos of their dream, and share how access to technology can help them achieve it. After receiving hundreds of video submissions, Technology for the Future invited the students to the Open Doors Challenge event, where he was accompanied by the Dream Force Team, along with community leaders, such as the chief of police and local pastors.
“I really wanted to get everyone together and celebrate their dream and put on a big show for them so they can see how important they truly are.” -A.M.
The morning of the celebration, families congregated outside the hall, eager to get in. As they entered, the Dream Force team greeted them. The event featured a DJ, the A&T dumb line, and dancers to celebrate the achievements of the children and their courage to share their dreams and take action. The children were invited to the floor of the colosseum, as parents, supporters, and volunteers cheered for the students. Sitting beside each other as one large family, the children received their gift one-by-one.
The countdown to unwrapping began as anticipation and excitement filled the hall. Tearing the wrapping paper away, the laptops revealed themselves. Exclamations of joy and excitement were accompanied by tears of happiness, as the children opened their gift. “These computers are not from us because we think that you need them, they’re from us because we need you”, Adrian shares with the kids as they hold their new laptops. Feeling the support of the community around them, the students are told how their dreams are not only important, but essential for our future.
The first step towards children understanding the importance of their dreams is the community coming together to acknowledge and celebrate them. Similar to the way we come together to celebrate sports, Adrian believes we must come together as Champions to empower children through access to opportunity. We must provide students with a support system that shows kids that their dream has the ability to change the world. It was Adrian’s support system, his family, that gave Adrian the courage and belief to follow his own dreams of donating 1 million laptops to students across the world.
