“Education isn’t simply about going to school. It’s about your ability to believe in yourself, feel supported and explore your dreams and visions. To do that in today’s society, if you have the technology you have freedom.” – Adrian Martinca
Adrian’s motivation to begin Technology for the Future started at an early age when he realized how much more he can do for himself and his family simply because he had access to technology. Adrian’s gratitude for the technology that allowed him to help his family left him wondering about the effects not having access to technology has on children. How would the lack of access affect their ability to succeed in school and pursue their dreams?
Adrian’s mind was often plagued by these questions and he set out to show others the truth that was so close to his heart. Students from Gillespie Elementary, who had received over 25 laptops from Technology for the Future participated in a playful trivia competition between two groups of students at the A&T theater. Separated by a curtain so that the students could not see each other, one group was handed a set of books while the other group was handed a laptop. Adrian asked a series of questions, and without fail, those with the laptop always had an answer, while those with books struggled and were disheartened by their loss. At the end of the questioning, the curtain was drawn back and the difference was revealed. It was a very eye-opening experience for all present and those that have since been shown the video to see how much of a difference a laptop can make, not only in how easily we can acquire information but also how much it can boost confidence and excitement to pursue any subject.
Although Adrian expected the results, it was disheartening to learn that it was the ongoing experience of such a large portion of the student population nationwide. The stories that Adrian had heard up to that point about students walking to libraries after school and having to complete their homework on their parents’ smartphones flooded renewed energy into the Dream Force.
